Ballad of a Lighthouse

I have always wanted to see a lighthouse.

They're an elegant, majestic, grandstand with beautiful stories hidden inside, I'm sure, from countless years spent saluting the sea. And to me, there is no better analogy for the Church of God than a lighthouse. Standing strong even through the most perilous storms, shining lucent messages into the darkness again and again, unceasing, until each lost ship has found its way safely into the harbor. They point to havens. They guide towards home.

What would go through the mind of a weary, dismayed sailor who is beaten by hunger and exhaustion and thirst, preparing for the end of his mortality, when out of the dark navy sea, a light shines forth, gleaming for just and instant, barely whispering There is hope!
Can you imagine? What sweet relief! What elation! And as the ship moves closer the whisper becomes a clear voice, then a loud shout, Here, here, here! Hope is here! Safety is at your reach! Cast your burdens back into the waves, anchor your sorrows and sail on. You have made it back home.

Dan and I met my family in the Outer Banks over memorial weekend, and just before sunset one night, he turns to me and says, "Carrie, we need to get in the car, now! I have a surprise, but we can't waste one second." Fifteen minutes later we were standing in front of the Bodie Island lighthouse... and I may or may not have cried haha. It was a pretty monumental moment for me.  JJ

Beloved, keep shining into the sea. Brace the storms, beat the darkness. There are still many ships and sailors who need to see the light.

"The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light." Romans 13:12

  1. Great picture. I love lighthouses too, probably because of Pete's Dragon. But I used to have a t-shirt with lighthouses on it...
